How surveys describe it
Wording varies by surveyor. Illustrative examples (not quoted from any real survey):
- “Excessive play noted at the cutless bearing.”
- “Stuffing box dripping excessively; recommend repacking or replacement.”
What it is
The cutless bearing supports the propeller shaft where it leaves the hull; the shaft seal keeps water out where the shaft enters. Both wear.
How serious it is
Moderate cost while the boat is already hauled, and a leak or vibration source if ignored. Owners report yard bills from a few hundred dollars to over a thousand.[1]
In our reports this usually lands under Negotiate. Your survey's details decide.
What it typically costs
| Scope | Estimated range |
|---|---|
| 1 item | $400–$1,600 |
| 2 items | $800–$3,200 |
These are whole-job ranges drawn from published figures.[1]
- Boat is already hauled
- Shaft does not need replacing or truing
Estimates to help you frame a conversation with a yard, not quotes. Real prices depend on the boat, the yard, access and what's found once work starts. Confirm with your surveyor or a qualified yard.
What to ask your surveyor or yard
- Is the shaft itself worn or bent?
- Can this be done during the survey haul-out?
