Expired fire extinguishers

What it means when your survey mentions it, how much it matters, and what it typically costs to put right.

How surveys describe it

Wording varies by surveyor. Illustrative examples (not quoted from any real survey):

  • “Portable fire extinguishers are past 12 years from date of manufacture.”
  • “Extinguisher gauge reads in the red.”

What it is

US Coast Guard rules require marine-type extinguishers. Disposable extinguishers are treated as expired 12 years after their manufacture date, and boats from model year 2018 on need 5-B or larger units.[1][2]

How serious it is

Cheap to fix, but it's a carriage requirement and a safety item: replace before you use the boat.

In our reports this usually lands under Fix. Your survey's details decide.

What it typically costs

Replace a fire extinguisher: estimated cost
ScopeEstimated range
1 item$30–$90
2 items$60–$180
3 items$90–$270

These ranges combine typical parts costs of $30–$90 per item.[1][2]

  • Marine-type, USCG-approved portable unit
  • Owner installs the bracket

Estimates to help you frame a conversation with a yard, not quotes. Real prices depend on the boat, the yard, access and what's found once work starts. Confirm with your surveyor or a qualified yard.

What to ask your surveyor or yard

  • How many extinguishers does this boat need?
  • Is there a fixed engine-room system, and is it in date?
